Midpoint spread
Measures the spread variation of the minimum and maximum value of a pay range in relation to the midpoint.
Calculation steps for an already existing pay range:
- subtract the minimum value of the range from the range midpoint
- divide the result to the minimum value of the range
- express the value as a percentage
Recommended spread:
- 20% to 30% for production and maintenance jobs
- 30% to 40% for clerical and specialists jobs
- 40% to 50% for middle management
- more than 50% for executive jobs
Most of the companies use the median, quartile or decile from a salary survey as a midpoint for their salary ranges. After this they apply the desired spread range.
